Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson was initially informed of her character’s disappearance in Avengers: Endgame by phone by Marvel boss Kevin Feige.

In the 2019 blockbuster, which now holds the record for the second biggest box office on record, Natasha Romanoff sacrifices herself so Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye / Clint Barton can reclaim the Soul Stone.

After almost a decade in the role, learning of her impending death must have hurt, surely?

“Kevin Feige called me, our boss at Marvel; I think he was nervous to tell me and sad about it, saying something like, ‘We all expected there would be big sacrifices. “” Johansson said recently. BBC Radio 1.

“It didn’t surprise me that this was a choice Nat would have made. I knew she had to feel at peace with this decision and that she was doing it out of love.

“It must have felt like she was purposeful in this decision and that it was her decision. And that it wasn’t something that was happening to her because so much of her life has happened to her.”
