Black Widow Star David Harbor says there might be some truth to Alexei Shostakov’s war stories about fighting Captain America – from a certain point of view. As the Red Guardian, the Soviet Union’s first and only super-soldier, Alexei boasts of having fought Captain America (Chris Evans) in 1983 or 1984. But the first Avenger was on the ice from 1945 to 2011 , and Alexei grabs Ursa’s (Olivier Richters) wrist when the Russian gulag inmate accuses Alexei of lying about his Cold War-era fight with his “great adversary” in the “theater of conflict” geopolitics ”.
“I will say they are absolutely 100% true,” Harbor said. Reverse with a “whiff of playful sarcasm” when asked about Alexei’s war stories. “Part of the funny thing about Alexei is that I wasn’t interested in reality. He doesn’t even know he’s lying. “
After being imprisoned by Dreykov (Ray Winstone) and spending decades in prison, Black Widow catches up with an outdated Red Guardian in 2016. When he reunites with his adopted daughters Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) and Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), he can’t help but talk about himself – and now he’s pushed Captain America through a window, escaping from his fight with the starry superhero over nuclear codes.
“Sometimes as an actor I will have to know reality because I will know [if] the character is lying, “Harbor said.” But Alexei just believes that stuff to be true. “
Director Cate Shortland wouldn’t reveal if there ever was a Captain America and Red Guardian showdown that didn’t fit the MCU’s timeline, agreeing with Harbor that Alexei thinks his stories are true.
“There’s one thing, storytelling, where people actually believe their lies to such an extent that even when faced with reality, they can’t process it,” Harbor explained. “It does not make sense [to them]. I think Alexei is pretty much the same way. He experiences this reality completely regardless of what others have seen or heard. “
Alexei’s story told in Black Widow That may not be true, but the actor is hoping to return to the MCU and potentially fight his comic book opponent.
“What’s funny about Alexei, you have this 25-year gap that we don’t know about. We see it in Ohio [in 1995] and in prison [in 2016]. And even before prison there was a time when he was the Red Guardian, he had to put the costume back on. There’s that period of time where he has all these stories about his life. It is questionable whether they are real or not, ”Harbor said in an interview. Black Widow press conference in June. “I think the classic Cold War thing is a really fun, funny dynamic between these two guys and the fact that they came out like nuclear warheads like in an arms race together. I think that’s a great one. concept which could be explored further. [Marvel Studios President] Kevin Feige in the room, did he hear? “
