The San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus released a beautifully funny video last week, but a barrage of threats and doxxing forced them to change their tone.

We would like to show you an extremely fun, uplifting, and intelligent video recently posted by the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus. But we don’t know if we can. It may or may not appear below because the Youtube version has been set to private. And amid a 36-hour onslaught of threats, doxxing and harassment from the right-wing mobs online, the chorus is removal of unauthorized versions of the video as quickly as possible. It’s not even known if the version below is allowed, but damn it it’s a very funny satirical video worth watching countless times.

The song is called “A Message from the Gay Community,” and it’s a clever hymn of victory over the gradual normalization of gay culture among America’s young people (“Even Grandma Loves Rupaul / And The World Is Becoming nicer / Gen Z is more gay than Grindr “). Wingnut’s fury focused entirely on two lyrics – “We are going to convert your children” and “We are coming for your children” – which the QAnon set assumes to be an open statement of the sexual exploitation of minors. But a full listening to the track (lyrics here) makes it clear to any reasonable listener that the choir is about winning hearts and minds by being funnier, friendlier, and better dressed (“Your kids will care / Fairness and justice for others / Your children will work to convert / All their brothers and sisters ”).

Yet in the mind of a sparkling Trumper, the word “convert” can only mean “have sex with” if it is uttered by a gay man. And because we live in the QAnon era, the choir director tells SFist that they have received death threats in the past 36 hours.

“We received emails, phone messages, threats on all of our social media platforms – not just the choir, but the staff, as well as the soloists who were in the song,” said SF executive director. Gay Men’s Chorus, Chris Verdugo, at SFist Thursday. “The [Youtube] the comment that keeps sticking to my head is the one that said “We are going to put lead in your head”.

“Someone on Twitter took a screenshot of the singers in the choir and created a spreadsheet and started identifying them,” he added. “Some of our member’s jobs were contacted saying, ‘Do you know a pedophile works for you? “Or things of that nature. The singers on their social media have received threats. It’s been a painful 36 hours.”

“The management team met last night and we have decided to close the office and, out of caution, send everyone home,” Verdugo said.

Bottom feed websites that you better not click have a blast; Pajamas Media blasted that “people who want to convert your kids to their way of life and their way of thinking don’t even bother to hide it anymore. Breitbart notes in its complaint that “in June, the choir also went viral for frightening political propaganda – a brief clip barking orders to receive a coronavirus vaccine, simply titled ‘Vaccinate! “” (This song is set to the tune of Three Dog Night’s “Celebrate” and would only be “scary political propaganda” for someone who has too much hydroxychloroquine.)

The choir released a statement early Thursday. “The conservative far-right media found our ‘Message …’ video and took it as their cause,” the statement said. “All of this has happened in the last 24 hours and it continues to gain momentum. They’ve taken the lyrics out of context to support a narrative that suits their intolerant and hateful needs. It is obvious that ironic humor is lost on many. As a result, we have seen user comments on YouTube, Facebook and Instagram become increasingly alarming. Emails to individuals and the choir office are vitriolic – including threats of harm. “

“We think the first action we need to take to keep everyone involved in the chorus and creating this safe video is to make it private. We communicate with the police at local and national level, ”the statement continued. What they don’t recognize is the disturbing nature of some of this harassment.

SFist won’t link the post, but a wild card has over a thousand tweets claiming many of the choir members are registered sex offenders. We will not name the names of these people, because these choristers are surely going through hell at the moment. But we checked Megan’s Law’s database, and each of those offers were just simple “like-name” deals citing offenders registered hundreds of miles from San Francisco, and the photos of the offender didn’t even match. not far from the appearance of the choir member.

The trolls harassing the choir members are the same who have never said a word about Matt Gaetz’s trafficking of a minor issue, or the serial assault charges against former Republican House Speaker Denny Hastert, nor on the widespread abuse of the Boy Scouts of America or the Catholic Church. But this first 42-year-old openly homosexual choir in the United States has already faced violent threats, and the homophobic harassment has never changed its content.

“For us, it’s not just about the artistic product that we produce, but also about our being activists,” Verdugo told SFist. “Social justice is a mantle that we take, and we take it back loud and clear. We will not back down.”
