Michael Sheen and David Tennant return for second season of fantasy drama Good omens.

Amazon has ordered a second six-part series of the drama adaptation of Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s book Good omens: the beautiful and exact prophecies of Agnes Nutter, witch.

In what was originally intended to be a limited series, the cast will return as Aziraphale, a picky angel and rare book dealer, and the fast-living demon Crowley, an unlikely duo who teamed up to save the world of the apocalypse.

Filming for the second season will begin later this year in Scotland.

The new season will explore storylines that go beyond the original source material; Being on Earth from the start and with the Apocalypse foiled, Aziraphale and Crowley find an easy life among mortals in London’s Soho when an unexpected messenger presents a surprising mystery.

Gaiman, who has a global deal with Amazon Studios, continues as executive producer and will co-present with executive producer Douglas Mackinnon, who will also return to directing. Rob Wilkins, John Finnemore and BBC Studios Productions comedy chef Josh Cole will also be executive producers, with Finnemore co-writing alongside Gaiman.

Good omens is produced by Amazon Studios, BBC Studios Productions, The Blank Corporation and Narrativia.

The first season, which also starred Jon Hamm, Nick Offerman, Jack Whitehall, Miranda Richardson, Adria Arjona, Michael McKean, Anna Maxwell Martin and Mireille Enos, premiered in May 2019.

Gaiman said: “It has been thirty-one years since Good omens was released, which means thirty-two years have passed since Terry Pratchett and I were lying in our respective beds in a Seattle hotel room at a World Fantasy Convention, and have prepared the sequel. I was able to use pieces from the sequel to Good Omens – that’s where our angels come from. Terry is no longer there, but when he was there, we talked about what we wanted to do with it Good omens, and where the story went next. And now, thanks to BBC Studios and Amazon, I can go.

He added: “I recruited some wonderful people and John Finnemore came on board to carry the torch with me. There are so many questions people have asked about what happened next, and also what happened before, to our favorite angel and devil. Here are the answers you’ve been waiting for. We’re back in Soho, and across time and space, solving a mystery, which begins with an angel wandering through Soho, with no memory.

Sheen said, “Personally, I’m against it, but the world isn’t going to save itself, is it? If David and I manage not to fall out too much this time around, there might even be a chance to end it.

Tennant added, “The return of Good omens is great news for me personally. As I rework with Michael and repeat Neil’s wonderful words. It’s probably less good for the universe because it almost certainly means there’s going to be a new existential threat to deal with, but, you know, swings and roundabouts.
