A photo featuring Jack Nicholson from the end of the iconic 1980 horror film The Shining went viral unexpectedly on Sunday.
Photo shows the 84-year-old actor smiling and waving while standing in front of a large crowd at the ghost-infested Overlook Hotel in a group shot that was famous on July 4, 1921 in the film.
Many Twitter users took to social media to point out that July 4 this year will mark the 100th anniversary of the fictional party, and have expressed their opinions and theories regarding the image.
Real good time: A photo featuring Jack Nicholson from the late 1980s film The Shining went viral unexpectedly on Sunday
The film was based on the 1977 novel of the same name, written by Stephen King, who expressed his disappointment with the adaptation of his book.
The feature film follows writer and recovering alcoholic Jack Torrance as he becomes a caretaker at the Overlook Hotel in Colorado for his winter season, taking with him his wife Wendy and young son Danny, played by Shelley Duvall and Danny. Lloyd.
However, the troubled character begins to lose his mind with the influence of supernatural entities who have taken up residence in the hotel and who ultimately attempt to murder his family.
The film ends when a ghost-possessed Torrance pursues his wife and son, the latter with psychic abilities, through a snow-covered maze and freezes to death.
Claustrophobic reaction: The film follows a recovering writer and alcoholic who begins to lose his sanity and put his family in danger when he becomes the keeper of a ghost-infested hotel
Extraordinary talent: The feature film directed by Stanley Kubrick was based on the novel of the same name by Stephen King in 1977
The feature film received an initially mixed critical reception, although it has been rated much more favorably since its debut.
Many viewers speculated that the photo at the end of the feature film implied that the soul of Nicholson’s character was taken to the hotel, among other supernatural events.
Director Stanley Kubrick previously discussed the photography and its implications, and according to The Take, he said Torrance may have been at the hotel before he arrived as a caretaker.
Specifically, the filmmaker remarked: “The photograph of the ballroom at the very end suggests the reincarnation of Jack.”
Stay forever: After the feature film’s release, Kubrick said Nicholson’s appearance in the photo “suggests Jack’s reincarnation.”
The outlet also pointed out that the photograph used by Kubrick was actually taken in 1921, although Nicholson’s head was airbrushed in the photo.
Several Twitter users began to openly discuss their findings regarding the photo, and one specifically mentioned that Torrance wasn’t the only person with a background with the Overlook.
User wrote: “I always thought that every person was a victim of the hotel. The hotel took a lot of people!
Open speculation: Several Twitter users took to the social networking site on Sunday to voice their opinions on the photo’s implications
Ideas: One user pointed out that Nicholson’s character was “tied to the hotel’s eternal violent history”
Others discussed the film’s broader implications as a social commentary regarding various atrocities committed in the past, and one person said Torrance was “tied to the hotel’s eternal violent history.”
One user specifically pointed out that, throughout his career as a director, “Kubrick’s attention to detail was at an insane level.”
Another pointed out that Torrance was doing a devil-like pose in the Rider-Waite tarot deck.
Hellish Involvement: One user said Nicholson’s pose mirrored that of the devil in the Rider-Waite tarot deck, leading another to applaud the director’s “attention to detail”.
The Shining was followed by a 2019 feature film titled Doctor Sleep, which starred Ewan McGregor as an old version of Danny Torrance and was based on King’s 2013 novel of the same name.
The film’s cast also included artists such as Rebecca Ferguson and Cliff Curtis and received widespread critical acclaim upon its release.
The adaptation also met with King’s approval, unlike the original feature film.
Follow-up: A sequel to the 1980 feature film, titled Doctor Sleep, received critical acclaim in 2019
Doctor Sleep was supposed to be followed by a spin-off centered around the character of Dick Hallorann, although its box office underperformance made the status of the project unclear.
Feature film director Mike Flanagan has also expressed interest in filming a sequel centered on psychic teen Abra Stone, which is said to have seduced King.
A series called Overlook, which will be centered around the hotel of the same name and directed by JJ Abrams, is currently in development for a future release on the HBO Max streaming service.
Future plans: A Dick Hallorann-centric project was in development before Doctor Sleep was released, and JJ Abrams is currently working on a potential HBO Max series focused on the Overlook Hotel.
