Jada Pinkett Smith doesn’t really drink now, but she was once a “weekend party girl,” who really went wild when she wasn’t on the clock. At least usually.
There was a time when she made the 1996 version of The mad professor, alongside Eddie Murphy, after indulging in her usual cocktail of ecstasy, weed and alcohol that touched her.
“I went to work high, and it was a bad batch of ecstasy, and I passed out,” she said Wednesday in a new episode of her Facebook Watch show, Red table. “And I told everyone that… I must have some old medicine in a vitamin bottle.”
Pinkett Smith and one of her co-hosts, her mother Adrienne Banfield-Norris, laughed at the absurdity of the excuse. “But I’m telling you what I did,” Pinkett Smith added. “I gathered my butt together and got on this set. It was the last time.”
The incident came as the women, along with their third co-host, Pinkett Smith’s daughter Willow Smith, were discussing the growing number of women who have a drinking problem. Dr. Jessica Mellinger, a liver disease specialist at the University of Michigan, appeared in the episode to warn that an increasing number of women under the age of 45 have had to be hospitalized for liver disease linked to the alcohol, because women have been drinking more since the start of the pandemic.
Pinkett Smith said that, in her case, she figured alcohol – and what came with it – was harmless.
“I was like, it’s not cocaine. It’s not heroin. I wasn’t doing things that I thought would be addicting, but I would do these three together. That was my. cocktail, ”she explained. “Your threshold is getting so high that what it takes for you to get to where you need to be … it will take me two bottles to get to” OK, if I do ecstasy, alcohol and the grass at the same time, I’ll get there faster and I can continue to get high, ”because then I can continue to drink. Because I know ecstasy is going to last me about three, four, five hours. The weed, you know, it’s just going to keep me alone, and then the alcohol is going to continue. I can just keep drinking, drinking, drinking. “
Banfield-Norris, who has openly discussed her past heroin addiction, said she had never heard of this before, and reminded the actress that “addiction runs deep in our family.”
Pinkett Smith also recalled “throwing it all up” from the home of Emmy Award-winning actress, producer and director Debbie Allen, who ran it in the late ’80s / early’ 90s. A different world.
She added that people tried to warn her but she “must have hit my bottom”.
the Girls trip The star said she later realized that she couldn’t drink alcohol on her own either.
“Literally, I understood quickly,” she said. “Once I was going to get that third bottle of wine, I said, ‘You have a problem,’ and it was cold turkey that day.”
Still, Pinkett Smith explained, she has had a glass of wine “here and there,” but she has to stay away from certain liquors, especially vodka.
“I’ll never forget, I was in New Orleans with Will. They had these lavender vodka drinks. Whoo! said Pinkett Smith. “I tell myself that I haven’t drunk vodka in years. I could try it. Let me tell you. I drank this lavender drink. I drank one. I drank it. drank a second and wanted a third. I haven’t stopped thinking about this drink until this day. But that’s when I realized I was like, ‘ Jada, you can’t play any game. ‘”
She said it takes tremendous self-discipline to avoid vodka spritzers when she sees vodka in the fridge.
