Naya Rivera tragically died in a boating accident on July 8, 2020.
Naya Rivera was not originally among the stars of “Glee,” but her outsized talent and personality soon saw her character, Santana Lopez, emerge as a force to be reckoned with and loved all at the same time.
The strength of her character and personality carried over to her personal relationships with the entire cast, which remained close (mostly) even after the show’s release. Now they have come together to pay tribute to their friend and colleague on the first anniversary of Naya’s death.

It was July 8, 2020 when Naya was officially declared dead after her body was recovered from a lake where she was swimming with her young son, Josey. It is believed that her last act was to bring Josey back to the boat she had rented, which probably saved her life.
Perhaps one of the most surprising tributes – which was touching in its own way – came from Lea Michele, the former star of the show who shares a somewhat strained relationship with the rest of the cast, including Naya.
She was involved in the midst of a controversy over her alleged behavior on set while filming the series when Naya passed away, creating an awkward friction between her and the rest of the cast as they initially hoped for survival. de Naya, then mourned her loss.
Nonetheless, on the anniversary of Naya’s death, Lea shared a screenshot of the show on her Instagram Stories with a dove emoji. But it was the meaning of the moment she chose that added an extra layer of poignantness.

In the scene shared by Lea, Naya performed “Don’t Rain on My Parade” from “Funny Girl” by Barbra Streisand. Lea performed the same song in the show’s first season, as part of her Barbra career.
In this fifth season, she was chosen to lead a new production, and it was Naya competing to be her understudy. And so, with subtlety, Lea was honoring an experience shared between the two actresses often competing with a song they both performed on the series.
Heather Morris, who played Naya’s best friend and lover onscreen – and had a close friendship beyond the show – took to Instagram to share a new tattoo she got to honor her friend.
Showing a series of photos, including images of her getting a tattoo, Heather’s new tattoo reads: “Tomorrow is not promised”. Naya shared this sentiment as part of one of her last tweets last year in July.
