Sophia Di Martino, the actress behind Loki’s female variant Sylvie Laufeydottir, admits she had no idea which show she was auditioning for.
Sophia Di Martino, star of the MCU series Loki, recently admitted that she “knew absolutely nothing”About the show she auditioned for before landing the life-changing role. Di Martino, who plays the female variant of Loki Sylvie Laufeydottir in the hit Disney + series, is an English actress whose resume so far has been largely characterized by appearances in British television series. Since her debut in the MCU, however, she has quickly become a global sensation and the most popular actor on IMDB.
The third MCU streaming series to release on Disney + this year, Loki follows the misadventures of the titular god of mischief after his escape with the Tesseract during the events of Avengers: Endgame. However, straying from the prescribed sacred timeline, Loki soon finds himself confronted with the mysterious Authority of Time Variation who enlists his help in locating one of his own counterparts from the alternate timeline. This other Loki turns out to be none other than Di Martino’s Sylvie, a female variant who was taken away by TVA as a child and subsequently escaped.

While Tom Hiddleston has spent the past 10 years playing the MCU fan favorite trickster god, the role of Di Martino has quickly earned a lot of praise among Marvel fans. Ultimately, however, Marvel’s infamous veil of secrecy was so tightly wrapped around the show’s production that even her co-manager had no idea which show she was auditioning for. I recently spoke with Entertainment tonight Di Martino explained:
I knew absolutely nothing. I didn’t know what the show was. I didn’t know the role. I didn’t know … I didn’t know anything … There was a very short scene between two people, Bob and Sarah, I think it was, on a train and we ended up being the scene of the train between Loki and Sylvie. But I had no idea why I was auditioning …
And then you know, when they offered me the job, Kate just told me the whole story and the character and just gave me the whole pitch. So it was only when I was offered the job that I knew what it was.
Although she showed up to her audition without caring about the true nature of the job, Di Martino won over an army of dedicated Marvel fans in a very short period of time. While trying to play an alternate version of a well-established and beloved MCU character would be a difficult task for any actor, Di Martino took on the role of Sylvie Laufeydottir as a mischievous trickster goddess takes on to wreak havoc. More importantly, she also managed to make Sylvie an intriguing character in her own right, independent of her relationship with her male counterpart.
In a recent Screen Rant interview, Di Martino pointed out that while she would occasionally “mirror“Hiddleston’s performance was”really important to me that she is her own character”. Considering the legions of fans clamoring for more of the MCU’s latest evil goddess, it’s probably safe to say that this is a goal she achieved with ease. While it’s unclear if Di Martino could possibly have his own spin-off or appear elsewhere in the MCU afterward. Loki ends, Marvel fans are keeping their fingers crossed that her tenure as Sylvie continues for many years to come.
