The Marvel Universe continues to grow. With new movies and what seems like an endless supply of TV series to come, Marvel Studios is really putting its money where its mouth is and giving fans what they want. This week alone sees the continuation of Kate Herron and Michael Waldron’s Loki, the release of Cate Shortland’s Black Widow (2021), and also the first look at the studios’ ambitious new animation project.
Marvel released its trailer for What if…? this week and the new series begs the question of whether events in the Marvel Cinematic Universe played out any differently. Most of the MCU’s cast are back, including Paul Rudd as Scott Lang / Ant-Man and a touching final appearance of T’Challa / Black Panther by Chadwick Boseman. What’s interesting though, is that some current MCU artists are missing from the lineup.
Released August 11, Marvel’s What if…? is a new animated series from Marvel Studios Kevin Feige. The anthology series will exist separately from the MCU in terms of timeline and events, but instead offer a glimpse of what would happen if those events had seemingly played out differently. For example, Hayley Atwell returns as Peggy Carter, although here it is she who takes the Super Soldier Serum instead of Steve Rogers to become the starry hero, Captain Carter. Another take is how T’Challa is the one taken on by Yondu (Michael Rooker) instead of Peter Quill (Chris Pratt).
The new series will be narrated by Uatu or The Watcher by Jeffrey Wright, and the first season will consist of 10 episodes. When the idea first pitched, Marvel boss Feige was given 30 slots for the animation, which were ultimately reduced to 10 – Jane Foster, as Thor was among those dropped in because of the live iteration of this story in Taika Waititi. Thor: Love and Thunder (2022).
With most of the MCU’s cast returning to reprise their roles, there are a few notable exceptions. Tony Stark AKA Iron Man and Captain America are among the characters who have been replaced with new voice actors. This is hardly a surprise due to the end of the contracts of the two actors after the two-part conclusion of the Infinity Saga, Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019).
But it’s interesting that characters like Carol Danvers AKA Captain Marvel and Doctor Strange have also been recast. While the reasons are unclear – it can range from scheduling conflicts to the effects of the industry-wide pandemic – this is notable due to the fact that these two characters have lead roles in upcoming films. MCU. Larson could even be involved in another franchise if these rumors are justified.
Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, The Collector, Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel, and Howard the Duck are also part of the series, but with different voices than their MCU film counterparts.
Captain Marvel 2The title of was revealed earlier this year. Wonders (2022) will reunite Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel with Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and feature Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani) on the big screen. Parris recently had his own kind of origin story as Rambeau in the first Phase 4 project, WandaVision, where the character gained new powers after crossing the “hex” of Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen). Ms. Marvel will introduce Kamala Khan to the MCU in a new Disney + series this year.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022) will see Benedict Cumberbatch’s Stephen Strange teaming up with Scarlet Witch in a Multiverse-themed story, which is also said to be one of Marvel’s spookiest projects to date. Both Wonders and the Doctor strange The sequel will exist in the ongoing Phase 4 era of the MCU.
It is not yet clear who will be voicing the characters in What if…? But as more and more revelations about this exciting new project from Marvel Studios, fans may get a clearer answer as to why these characters have been recast for the animated series.
