Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige Explained Why Black Widow is between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. Seven films and over a decade later, Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johannsson) finally has a solo film available in theaters and on Disney +. Being that Black Widow sacrifices herself for her surrogate family in Avengers: Endgame, this last adventure is a midquel serving as swan song to the character.
As the first major film to release as part of Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Cate Shortland’s Black Widow picks up the audience to move forward. As the film opens with flashbacks to Natasha’s life in 1995, the majority of Black Widow takes place seven years before End of Game, following Natasha on the run for violating the Sokovia accords. The life of a fugitive takes Natasha to Budapest where she reunites with her surrogate sister and her fellow Red Room intern, Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh). Together, they recruit the rest of their family, including Melina Vostokoff (Rachel Weisz) and Red Guardian (David Harbor) to help take down Dreykov (Ray Winstone) and the Red Room.

In an interview with GE, Kevin Feige spoke about the decision to place Black Widow where it is on the MCU timeline. He said that in developing the movie they always knew it would come out after End of Game. Therefore, it has always been envisioned as a spiritual epilogue of the Infinity Saga. Feige went on to explain how Civil war inspired Black Widow. Read what he had to say below:
“There is a very precise moment in Civil war where Natasha has a conversation with Tony Stark then leaves the frame, then a very precise in Infinity war where she returns to Edinburgh with Sam Wilson and Steve Rogers, ”Feige said. “Because Black Widow takes place afterCivil war and pre-Infinity war, the film kind of fills that gap in a way that not only fills in what she literally did during that time, but fills that other aspect of her life that was very important in her training and insights into the family, and why she was so skeptical of family and why the Avengers had become something that filled the ideal family for her. “
At the end of Black Widow, a blonde Natasha says she now has two families. The ending also serves as an introduction to Infinity war, with Natasha acquiring a jet as she prepares to meet Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) and take her fellow Avengers out of Raft Prison, becoming the Secret Avengers. While visiting Screen Rant’s set in fall 2019, Johansson explained that she never wanted to do a Black Widow origin story because she didn’t want to go back that far. To post-Civil war finds Natasha in a precarious position that requires a lot of thought. In The Avengers (2012), Natasha tells Loki “I have red on my ledger, I would like to erase it ”, and Black Widow certainly offers his hero a fence in this regard.
Black Widow does her best to wrap up all ends of Natasha Romanoff’s story, from Clint Barton AKA Hawkeye’s infamous Budapest mission to passing the torch to a new widow. Black Widow‘s’ post-credits scene takes place after Natasha’s End of Game dead and mourns Yelena on a collision course with Hawkeye. Pugh set to reprise his role as Yelena in Disney + series after Clint Barton and she will likely become Natasha’s successor. Had Black Widow not took place between Civil war and End of Game, the family theme probably wouldn’t have resonated so much.
