Loki’s shocking mid-credits scene in Episode 4 may have just laid the groundwork for an empire ruled by the MCU’s next big bad.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Loki Episode 4, “The Nexus Event”, now streaming on Disney +.

The fourth episode of Loki had no shortage of shocking twists, surprise cameos, and unexpected thrills. Not only did the episode reveal that the Keepers of Time themselves were a lie, it also apparently killed Tom Hiddleston’s main character, Loki. However, in a final surprise, the episode’s mid-credits scene revealed that Loki was alive and well in the company of other variations. And its location can be LokiThe first big clue of the next big villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

While the Weather Variation Authority was introduced in Loki as the only all-powerful power controlling all the time, Marvel fans anticipate the arrival of another authoritative temporal power. With TVA’s stranglehold on the chronology endangered by the actions of Sylvie and Loki, Loki might be heading towards the introduction of time-traveling tyrant Kang the Conqueror. And Episode 4’s mid-credits scene may have teased its base of operations.

Kang’s arrival in the MCU is imminent – it has already been confirmed that he appears as the main antagonist of 2023 Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, with Jonathan Majors ready to take on the role. In the comics, Kang is a time traveler who sets himself up as the ruler of an empire spanning the borders of space, time, and the multiverse. He has adopted multiple identities over the years, in order to establish himself as the ruler of various civilizations over time. In order to maintain his hold over his domain over time, Kang operates out of his city-state of Chronopolis.

Chronopolis is a city made up of fragments of eras that Kang conquered, each block existing in a different era, while hidden gates provide access to other eras under Kang’s control. More primitive territories are found closer to the city border, while Kang Citadel is in the center. The city owes its timeless existence to its location in limbo – a dimension beyond the reach of time. After Avengers: Endgame revealed how time works differently in the MCU’s Quantum Realm and Ant-Man and the Wasp offering a fleeting glimpse of a futuristic city based there, it’s probably reasonable to assume that the Quantum Realm will take Limbo’s place in the MCU and serve as the location for Kang’s Chronopolis.

The city of the quantum realm in Ant-Man and the Wasp

Following this possible look at Chronopolis in Ant-Man and the Wasp, the mid-credits scene at the end of “The Nexus Event” may also just have given audiences a glimpse of Kang’s seat of power. The scene sees Loki waking up in what he initially thinks to be Hel, only to be faced with a bunch of variants (at least three of which appear to be other Lokis) and a city in ruins. The presence of other variations, as well as Loki’s arrival in this realm after it was “pruned” from the timeline by Ravonna Renslayer, suggests that the city itself is made up of buildings removed from the timeline (a ruined version of Avengers Tower appears to be visible). While it seems unlikely that TVA will send resources directly to Kang the Conqueror – who is their enemy in the comics – it could be that this limbo realm is about to be captured by Kang to serve as his seat. power, the light transformed into the MCU version of Chronopolis.

With Kang the Conqueror on his way to the MCU and Loki Exploring – and breaking – the rules of time travel, it seems inevitable that the Disney + series will somehow lay the groundwork for the tyrant of the time to come and his time empire. Now, Episode 4’s last-minute reveal could have marked the MCU’s first trip to the future Kang Kingdom.

Loki stars Tom Hiddleston, Owen Wilson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Wunmi Mosaku, Sophia Di Martino, Richard E. Grant, Sasha Lane and Eugene Cordero. New episodes air Wednesdays on Disney +.
