Watching Netflix with the password of a friend or family member you don’t live with? The company has you in the sights! You may soon have to take out a paid subscription to the movies and series streaming platform if you want to continue enjoying its programs. Netflix wants to fight against account sharing, by putting in place new rules to reduce its number of “illegal” users.
Billions of euros lost
To do this, the platform will set up double authentication. To use a Netflix account, you will need, as is already the case, the owner’s password. But, and this is the novelty, it will also be necessary to confirm its identification, via a request sent by email to the owner of the account.
If Netflix is implementing this, it is because it is a big financial stake for the streaming platform. Account sharing would cost the company billions. Up to 7.5 billion euros according to some analysts. Netflix claims 8 million subscribers in France, but the platform is actually consulted by 19 million French people every month, according to Médiamétrie. It remains to be seen whether the additional 11 million would be ready to take the subscription step if they are deprived of their series.
