Since it was one of the top picks on Netflix and everyone is talking about it, I started watching Manifest and had five episodes before I realized it was basically a version. of Lost with some wacky twists and I don’t fall for that anymore. But the deeply strange and wonderful The good fight is back, and the pilot had Christine Baranski and Audra McDonald at their best, so I can’t wait to see what happens this season (although we’ve said goodbye to two of the show’s best characters, boo). Can we also talk about Loki? We probably can’t without giving away spoilers, but episode three gave us a LOT, most of which I think were attempts in the wrong direction.
I was so engrossed in writing last Sunday’s trailer post that I totally missed the new one. Ted lasso trailer that dropped that day. Derp. Don’t worry, I’ve included it here (in case you haven’t watched it 1000 times like me already).
The more they fall
This trailer (sorry, this is the official teasing) for a western about rival outlaw gangs opens with a train heist where Regina King and Lakeith Stanfield free Idris Elba from captivity – with Fela Kuti’s “Let’s Start” playing – then proceed to a slow motion shot. It’s almost too cool to take it all at once. Our intrigue: Outlaw Nat Love (Jonathan Majors) and his gang Stagecoach Mary (Zazie Beetz), Bill Pickett (Edi Gathegi) and Jim Beckwourth (RJ Cyler) are rivals of all-new Rufus Buck (Elba) and of her crew, The Traitor Judy Smith (King) and Cherokee Bill (Stanfield). Delroy Lindo and Damon Wayans Jr., also starring in The more they fall, (what a cast!) which is directed by Jeymes Samuel and is coming soon to Netflix (please hurry!).
Ted unleashes his alter ego Led Tasso for being tough and mean to struggling Richmond Football Club and it’s so goofy and ridiculous but so very very Ted lasso (lol he calls them “turd birds” what?). Jason Sudeikis and the rest of the team are back in season two, and we’ve got less than a month to wait for new episodes, folks (note: you can buy Richmond jerseys at the Ted Lasso merch store) . Season 2 of Ted lasso premieres July 23 on Apple TV Plus.
The suicide squad
Is Idris Elba in all the movies coming out this summer? (for the record, I very much agree with that). James Gunn’s take on the Elba-led supervillain group as Bloodsport (revealed finally!) pits them against even more evil villains on a remote island in the jungle. Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Joel Kinnaman, Michael Rooker, Pete Davidson, Nathan Fillion and John Cena also star in The suicide squad, which hits theaters and on HBO Max on August 6.
Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings
We saw a teasing for this movie in April, but it’s the official trailer (and again, I think there’s not much of a difference between teasers and trailers anymore, but I digress). Simu Liu plays Shang-Chi, trained as an assassin in his childhood, who tries to escape to have a normal life. This latest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has an almost entirely Asian cast, including its lead character. And yes, the giant Shang-Chi monster is shown fighting in a cage match. seems to be the abomination. Tony Leung, Michelle Yeoh and Awkwafina also star in Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings, in theaters September 3.
Keegan Michael Key and Cecily Strong play a couple trapped in a musical until they find true love. OK, sure, why not. This six-part series has a cast of top musical talent including Kristin Chenoweth, Alan Cummings, Fred Armisen, Jane Krakowski and Martin Short. It sounds like one of those movies that’s going to be either super funny or super cringe (although I laughed at the character of Strong realizing that musicals kill people all the time, so that’s a good one. sign). Schmigadoon! (I’ll leave the exclamation mark to them) hits Apple TV Plus on July 16, with new episodes every Friday.
