The filmmaker behind Superman, The Goonies, and other modern classics left a huge legacy after his passing. Now, many of the people who have continued to bring Richard Donner’s stories to life are paying homage to him.

It was ad yesterday that Donner had passed away, a director / producer who had a Multi-decade resume that included some of today’s biggest comic book movie franchises. it was him who chose Christopher Reeve to play the Man of Steel in the 1978s Superman, and he was a producer alongside Lauren Schuler Donner the first X Men movie. There was no one like Donner, professionally and personally, and many people he worked and inspired with came to thank him. Marvel boss Kevin Feige released a statement (through Marvel studios) thanking Donner, alongside his wife and production partner, for mentoring him during his Hollywood debut. He also gave them credit for being “key supporters throughout the birth” of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which has grown into the largest comic book franchise in movie history. Here is Feige’s statement in full:

“Richard Donner not only made me believe that a man could fly, he made me believe that comic book characters could come to life on the big screen with heart, humor, humanity and verisimilitude. Most of all, he taught me that it can and should be done with respect, kindness and kindness to everyone in front of and behind the camera. Dick and Lauren became mentors early in my career and key supporters throughout the birth of the MCU. I owe my career to the way they took the time to educate and teach a kid in New Jersey who didn’t know how to use a fax machine or make coffee very well. I always thought Dick was immortal. I still do. My thoughts are with Lauren and the whole family.

In addition to Feige, director Steven Spielberg called Donner the “greatest Goonie of all” in a statement to Variety. Directors like Batman vs. Superman Zack Snyder, Doctor Strange Scott Derrickson, by Star Trek Bryan fuller, and Shaun of the Dead Edgar wright tributes shared on social networks. Wonder woman Director Patty Jenkins wrote on Twitter: “I loved Richard Donner as a person, and I admired him enormously as a director. Think he did The omen, Superman, the Goonies, and Deadly weapon in a little over 10 years, and many more. Superb. Truly one of the greatest American filmmakers of all time.

Donner’s loss also resonated in the comic book world, with creators like Joe quinones, Rachel Glucksternposter designer Drew struzan, Jody houser, Jamal Igle, Sterling Doors, and more thanking him Superman director for his work. Gates and Igle worked on DCs Super girl together, and the latter noted on Twitter that, “I might not be working in comics without you.” Jim Lee, Creative Director of DC Comics, also shared a memory of seeing Superman in theaters, writing: “It changed my life and inspired countless millions of people.”

Donner was 91 and will be sadly missed by his wife and production partner.
