Netflix is currently one of the most lucrative companies in the world, and many producers, directors and actors dream of signing with the platform. Steven Spielberg was not, but he would eventually have changed his mind. Indeed, the genius producer was reluctant to work with Netflix, but he overstepped his reservation and entered into a partnership with the platform.
Two more years ago, Steven Spielberg was very vindictive to Netflix, expressing strong hostility towards the video-on-demand platform and stressing the importance of the theatrical experience. The director even went so far as to ask that Netflix productions not be Oscar-eligible. But it seems ultimately that he has changed his mind since Steven Spielberg’s production company, Amblin, has signed an agreement to produce several feature films per year for the streaming giant; and it was Spielberg himself who announced the partnership in a press release.
“At Amblin, storytelling will forever be at the center of everything we do, and from the minute Ted [Sarandos, PDG
de Netlfix] and I started discussing a partnership, it was very clear that we had an incredible opportunity to tell new stories together and reach audiences in new ways, ”Spielberg said in the statement. He also clarified that this new agreement in no way meant that Amblin would focus exclusively on Netflix, and that the company would continue to work with Universal Pictures and its other partners.
For now, there is no information yet regarding the projects that will result from this new partnership, but no doubt that this will significantly increase Netflix’s advantage over its competitors.
